Whitehill House Rosewell

Whitehill House is located in Rosewell and was constructed in 1844 for Wardlaw Ramsay, who inherited Whitehill after the death of his older brother. Wardlaw was a wealthy mine owner and landlord, and a very prominent figure in the area.

The huge house was later obtained by an engineer called Archibald Hood, who was an engineer who had big successes in expanding and improving the Rosewell Colliery. He later went on to own several Collieries in Midlothian and helped improve a Colliery in Wales.

In the 1st World War the house was used as a Red Cross hospital, then in 1924 was taken on by the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul who cared for children and young people with additional support needs.

Later the building was run as a hospital up until 1998.
